Madeon’s Adventure Machine

You could me a bit of an “old git” when it comes to the web. I am old enough to have been part of the first wave of the “rich media” web as a Flash/Director developer. Back in the day, when getting video online required Java applets, Flash or Shockwave, and the quality was horrendous, the end user had to have a proprietory plug-in installed in their browser, and it took an age to load (not to mention the fact that many sites had mulitple versions, one for Internet Explorer, and one for Netscape Navigator). 3D online was unheard of, unless you hand-traced a sequence of renders frame-by-frame…(mind you, 3D is still not exactly common…) – almost EVERYTHING was untried, new, untested, or just not possible. The wild frontier!

Today, Flash is dead. RIP Flash.

Today, We have an amazing Internet, with sound, video, a seemingly endless array of technologies, but to me, just sometimes, I feel something is missing. I love the open nature of today’s Internet, but I have to confess that I miss some of the really “jaw-dropping” Flash sites, those sites that were “all singing, all dancing”.

The web today is a different beast. A thing of infinite beauty and endless possibilities, but somehow less animated, less “action packed”…

…OR…

I’m just not looking in the right places, and I’ve been too busy getting excited about the technologies and tools that underpin these sites, and I’ve lost sight of the possibilities!

Either way, i found Madeon’s Adventure Machine completely by accident, while watching a random “10 cool websites that have XXXX” video on YouTube, and finding it reminded me that the web is still capable of doing something unexpected. Something “cool”. No Flash, no plugins, just web technologies and APIs, used to create something interesting…

As a result I spent a good chunk of time thatI should have been doing something more important, just grooving out…

Note to self: Try to spend a bit more time just “surfing”…the web still rocks
